Origin of Suburb Name

Named by Thomas Hudson Beare, who bought the land in 1838, after teh ruins of Netley Abbey in Hampshire, the county where he was born. The name is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “wet pasturage”. The suburb of Netley Estate was laid out in 1913 by Herbert White Hughes.

It is well served by surrounding schools (state and private) within a 2km radius, including William Light School (combined) on Errington Street, Plympton, Plympton Primary School in Owen St, Plympton, the oldest school in the western suburbs on its original site, St John The Baptist Catholic School (primary), Immanuel Primary School and Immanuel College (combined) on Morphett Road, Novar Gardens.

Typical Features

Prolific greenery is in evidence in most streets including grasses verges on footpaths, quite large shrubs and lines of trees. Almost 20 per cent of homes in the suburb area are rented, with separate houses accounting for 92 per cent of homes. There are still many older homes that date back to the post-World War II era, including its share of cream brick homes. Re-generation of homes has recently begun.

Local Attractions

The Adelaide Airport southeast boundary borders the suburb’s west point, but it enjoys proximity to the city, Glenelg and West Beach. Nearby Baroda Reserve includes play equipment while Rex Jones Reserve in Kurralta Park has tennis courts, a basketball court and barbecue facilities.
